Christian Songs Are Different Nowadays
Through the years Christian music has seen many changes. Most will tell you that modern Christian music was born of the Jesus movement. Christian artist Larry Norman was a pioneer in the early days of Christian music. There was also a mainstream movement during the sixties that got the message out there. The band Ocean released a Christian song that even made it into the hot 100.
That God song "Put Your Hand in the Hand" was embraced by a large number of people this popularity really served to deliver Gods message to a secular audience. While one would think the biggest hurdle would've been non believers, that was not actually the case. Regrettably it was other Christians who would not accept these mainstream Christian songs. There was a belief in the community that "Rock Stars" could not deliver the message in an appropriate way. Fortunately the detractors were not victorius. Christian music started to gain momentum.
The bandwagon effect became the next problem for the genre. Artists with very little talent were suddenly releasing Christian songs. The demand was high, unfortunately the supply of talented Christian artists was lacking. To try and capitalize on the popularity record companies released everything they could even if it was lacking. In some ways the Christian music movement became a place for no talents to make a name for themselves. Were they truly believers? That is between the artists themselves and God.
With time Christian music started to see a flood of real talent. Performers who formerly hid their beliefs began to deliver the message. The Christian songs that started being produced were of a much better quality. Petra a Christian band that was an early pioneer in the genre was formed in the early seventies. Petra was an influential band that essentially set the bar for musicians to come. The eighties saw a great increase in popularity for Petra
Petra's popularity continued into the 90's. More styles of music started being incorporated into Christian music. Christian performers were creating music in just about every style. The Christian music movement had finally arrived.
The nineties were time of great growth for Christian music. DC Talk was huge in the nineties. They were able to adapt with time. I think most people still know the name tobyMac. Gangsta rap was also big at the time. Christian rappers like Tbone had an answer for that. Christian music has stood the test of time. It's no longer playing catch up with mainstream music. As trends in music change the genre stays in pace.
Bands like Jars of Clay often release albums that debut on the charts. You will find these Christian songs in feature films and television. There will always be naysayers. Hopefully this will not discourage people from enjoying this fabulous music.
