The most important aspect of shoot with a green screen stage is ensuring the lighting is done right. The goal is to make sure that subjects don't cast shadows on the green screen set. Shadows tend to give dark areas on the final image and can be hard to work with in the post-production process. Below are some simple heads-up on how to light a green screen background.

What you are going to do first is of course set-up your green screen stage. You will need to make sure that it is even and straight if you will be using chrome key green fabric or cloth. If you are lucky enough to be filming on a hard green cyc, you will not have to concern yourself about any wrinkles. Please ensure the surface area is clean. You may be wondering the importance of doing such is. Any footprints or wrinkled fabric will cause shadows. And a shadow is the last thing we want to show up in our green screen studio.

After setting up your green screen stage, you are now ready for the basic lighting. You maybe be thinking which lights to use. There are so many lighting equipment out there that give us a wide selection of options to pick from. Our lighting decision should be by what we want to shoot and how we are going to shoot it. Perhaps you need to capture a product photo or an interview setup. You may be filming inside or outdoors. Or you may prefer built-in lighting or want to consider natural lighting. It is really your own preference on which lighting equipment to utilize as long as you can achieve desired effects. The workplace is also to be a factor. When you work in a tight area taking photos, you can use continuous lights. These kinds of lights do not blow off and saturate cameras. Flash lighting is advisable when working in a large workplace when taking photographs. This can be incorporated with the assistance of photography umbrellas. The process works by directing the flash lights into the opening of the photography umbrella which distributes a softer light on the subject. Whether you are shooting for video or film, a soft light is very important so as not to let it get concentrated on the talent. Harsh lights tend to create unappealing and washed out environment. You can also use studio lights. These lights are bright and are optimal in reducing shadows. Impressive results are often brought about by using studio lights being diffused by umbrellas. Please be cautious in the handling of studio lights. They are easily heated and can cause fire.

When you are certain what lights you are going to use, you can start positioning your lighting equipment. Have a light a couple feet in front of the green screen which serve as lighting for the actress. Place two other diffuse lights on opposite sides of the room. A diffuser light is like a lampshade with soft light and gives it off in every directions. These lights should also be positioned five feet away from the green screen. By having direct lights on either side will help eliminate shadows and serve as backlight to the actor.

After you are complete with setting up the lighting on your green screen stage, position your talent in front of the camera. Remember to position your subject properly wherein they would not create shadows on the green screen stage.
