Unit chief Special Agent Sam Cooper is a mentally and physically fierce natural leader who is not afraid to put his career on the line in order to stand by his convictions. Cooper strives to avoid political bureaucracy and has handpicked an eclectic group of profilers to work outside the confines of Quantico.
They include strong-willed and outspoken Beth Griffith, the newest member of the team who joins them from the FBI Threat Assessment Task Force; former British Special Forces soldier Mick Rawson, who is confident and handsome and works as a highly skilled marksman with an undiluted eye for rooting out evil; John "Prophet" Sims, a former convict with a street-smart edge and a calm, Zen-like presence, who is determined to make amends for past sins.
So the day will undoubtedly come when CBS2's Criminal Military Procedural Investigation - or CMPI, if you will - arrives on your dial. By then the second channel will have mastered the art of mixing familiar elements to create something, ahem, "original." Kind of like a found-art project. For example, viewers are just given pictures they are really familiar with: authorities in the crime-and-punishment genre fronted by someone who looks important and intuitive. That person will stare into a microscope, pull off his or her sunglasses sullenly while looking at a really gory dead body, or stand up and look off into the distance as the camera pans in - a clue to the viewer that this person, obviously a profiler of some sort, is thinking like a genius or a killer.
When that time comes - and it's coming - remember, you read about it here first. How does this relate at all to Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, the spawn of Criminal Minds? Well, clearly this show is a kind of test run. There is not a word or action in the first couple of episodes that you haven't seen before, probably on CBS. You could watch this show with the sound off, which is advisable, and still know what's going on.
Don't worry, he manages a couple of snips before Whitaker kicks the door in. Oh, and the eyes? The unsub washes them in the sink then puts them in a newspaper rack, and our elite team immediately profiles the killer as someone who likes "old media" and thus must be between 40 and 60 (and doesn't own an iPad, one assumes).
In the first episode of the show, the team of FBI agents headed by Forest Whitaker's Sam Cooper gets called in to deal with the abduction of a little white girl in a Cleveland suburb. As they're making their initial canvass, Agent Beth Griffith (Janeane Garofalo) is approached by a black woman from the inner city who complains that her own daughter went missing a week earlier, and she didn't receive any kind of huge police/FBI/media dragnet like this girl has.
I watch an episode of the spin-off that features scene after scene of kidnapped little girls crying and pleading to go home, or an episode of the original in which a pair of alcoholic thrill-killers slaughter the occupants of one mini-mart after another, and it feels like the show takes way too much pleasure in showing you this imagery. The stuff where the FBI team sits around and tries to psychoanalyze the bad guy from afar is there to lend things an air of legitimacy, but it's a cover. The crying and the begging and the people getting their eyeballs scooped out is what the show is mainly interested in - and since it's been a successful enough formula to merit a spin-off, why wouldn't it be?
As for the rest of "Suspect Behavior" - the most redundant spin-off title since "NCIS" (which, remember, was launched out of "JAG") originally called itself "Navy NCIS" - it suffers from all the things that have kept me from having much use for the parent show all these years.
