Traffic Light is a new comedy television series which revolves on the issues of friendships and romances. Though often difficult and sometimes messy but always worth the work, friendship and relationship both enhance and complicate our lives.
While taking care of Tommy in the mornings to do Melissa a favor, Mike was surprised by how much he enjoyed the morning coffee dates he had with the other neighborhood moms, who welcomed him immediately into their tight-knit group. Meanwhile, Ethan discovered that it was so hard to break up with a girl after she made a bold move.
As most of the guys experience as they grow old, each man finds himself a different stage of life. Set in Chicago, watch Episode 5 of Traffic Light and see how the three guys manage to maintain their relationships and their life.
"So," LeBlanc says: "it's History Boys meets you saying it's not History Boys."
Traffic Light, a new sitcom debuting tonight on Fox, is Perfect Couples and Better With You meets Fox saying it's not Perfect Couples or Better With You. But in this case that's not entirely bad.
The more you get into the details, the more similar it sounds, to those shows-which themselves are essentially the Modern Family formula applied to relationships-and to the philosophy of almost every recent network sitcom about couples.
Partly that's because the show, over the course of the episodes, reveals that it doesn't really sign on to this high-concept premise: each of the relationships has stress and conflicts-or else there would be no show. But it quickly becomes apparent that these men (Mike and Adam, anyway) really like being paired up, that their significant others are partners and interesting people in their own right, and that, like men in real life, they're in relationships because they want to be.
Maybe more important, Traffic Light gets the relationships among its different subunits better than Perfect Couples. One of my issues with that NBC sitcom is that-family connections aside-the characters seem so annoying, to each other and the audience, that it's not clear why they would want to spend this much time with each other in the first place. Traffic Light doesn't push its characters to extremes (Ethan being the possible exception, and the weakest principal), so you can believe that all these characters actually like one another. And the show has a loose, dry humor that Franklin, in particular, pulls off well.
After about 20 minutes of trying to figure out why this show is called Traffic Light, I finally got it. At first I thought it was because about half the episode seemed to be taking place in the characters' cars, and then I wondered if maybe between this and House, some Fox executive just likes naming shows after things he sees on the way to work. (Which got me psyched for the new 2011 fall lineup, including promising new series like Bus Stop and Homeless Guy Scratching His.Oh My God He's Doing That in Public?!) Then of course it all clicked into place: It's a metaphor!
(Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory calculated that one out.) The "relationships, amirite?" plot-lines of the pilot were a little shaky and old-hat, but if the show manages hits its stride, I could see adding it to my comedy to-watch list.
