How To Choose The Right Piano For You

Author: chrisbruzzi

Ok so you decided you really want to learn how to play piano. Its a great thing to do for your mind and soul. Its excellent for beginners from young to old.
Its great that you have an interest in learning to play the piano. The first thing before you start learning is to choose the best piano for your lessons.

Digital vs Acoustic?

You might have heard these terms being thrown around quite a lot while you were choosing a piano. For budget seekers, a used digital piano would certainly be the right choice due to its smaller size and low cost. However, you do need to make sure that everything is in good working order and contains three standard pedals, together with 88 keys and weighted hammer action. This is because, most classical or jazz music is written to encompass almost the whole range of the piano. For your purposes this is the absolute minimum you should get. However some other classical music purists would argue for the benefits of an acoustic instrument because some digital pianos do not have as good a sound as an acoustic piano. The acoustic pianos usually found on the market today are upright pianos and grand pianos. Uprights are more compact pianos and Asian made versions of these are usually found in most houses of today. Grand pianos are one of the largest pianos to date and the most expensive version, however, this gives it a brilliant, singing quality and they are thus often found in concert halls.

Is There A Piano Bench?

Posture is one of the most important aspects of the human body and in the case of getting a new piano, you do need to check if a piano bench is included. Otherwise, you might have to purchase a new piano bench according to your budget, needs and demands. An adjustable piano bench is one of the best piano benches in the market as it encourages good posture, prevents injuries with alignment of the torso and arms with the keyboard and prevents hand injuries. Without an adjustable piano bench, other strange materials are used to bring the pianist to the correct height - this can include phone books, pillows and bits of carpet which can be quite uncomfortable. Adjustable piano benches are usually made out of leather (highest cost) and cheaper versions are made of plastic or wood such as mahogany and walnut.

Taking Care Of Your Piano

Now that you have chosen your piano, in order to learn to play piano well, you would also need to take care of it. Most pianos are not suitable to be placed in direct sunlight as this will damage the wooden parts of the piano such as the soundboards. The most desirable temperature is about 15-21?C with humidity of 45-60%. Acoustic pianos will also require tuning twice a year on average, or even more if it is heavily played or is located in a place with extremes of temperature and humidity.

In conclusion, choosing a good piano is not a difficult experience if you know what to look for. As a beginner, you just need to focus on getting a piano with the best sound, and one that fits your budget in order to learn to play piano.
