Author: petermarrollis

When choosing a name it is all about distinquishing yourself from your competition so many companys will keep this a priority. Company names are formed and choosen for a variety of differnt reasons.

One of the most common ways of selecting a company name is to use something personal. A quick look through your local newspaper will probably introduce you to many personalised business names. Tim & Tim, Harry and Johnsons, Son and CO are all possible examples of what could be found. One24 is another example. Locally, this makes you business stand out from the crowd dramactically. However, it does little to tell new customers what your company does.

describtive names are the best choices for small businesses. This tells prospective clients exactly what your company does. Some examples would be to call yourself "Window Company" or IT Support Stamford. The problem with this is that it does not set you aside from your competition.

A less personal option would just to use a generic company name with perhaps the brand. This type of name really helps build a connection with your consumers. This is less direct than a standard name. A simple look though a yellow pages would offer dozens of examples. A barbor called Brookside Cuts or a printing shop called "Select Prints" may be an example. These names usually offer some soft of differnce but do not competely set your company apart from your competition.

An alternative is to choose a company name that is 'freestanding'. These names are not related to the company or product but are abstract. One possible fictional example would be to call your catering business Tyler's Limited. There are many popular brand names that illustrate this point. Consider, Kodak, Gillette, or Mars, these names will probably be instantly recognisable to you and conjure up a particular product or business. This is one was to set yourself apart from your competors. Will your clients know what type of industry you are offering?

Choosing a name is very simple, yet it is not uncommon for people to "sleep on it" for a few weeks. Although company names can change throughout the life of the company most people are better off be satified from the start. Consider how you are differnt and stand out in your local market. Once the decision is made focus on the important business of making your company a success.
