Nokia N8 lives up to expectations
Nokia's new addition to its mobile family is the Nokia N8. It looks like no other nokia phone on the market, with it's sleek design and stylish suo-tone aluminium housing. It has a range of buttons and knobs to keep idle hands occupied featuring a new 'mini-HDMI' port for connecting directly to a Plasma screen or monitor so you can stream content straight from the phone. The screen is beautiful, with deep, rich blacks and vibrant colours, and is ideal for playing back video files or playing interactive games. There is a massive 12-megapixel camera on the back of the phone with Carl Zeiss optics, matched with a bright Xenon flash. The N8's 12-megapixel camera is definitely one of the best camera phone we've ever used, taking fast photos and featuring the best digital zoom we've come across. The photos are processed at a more natural colour depth, but you can adjust this with a vibrant colour mode, or after you have taken the photo in the N8's built in Photo Editor. The N8 also shoots High Definition video at the standard 25 frames per second, which is slower than some smartphones on the market, but this doesn't affect the overall high quality of the video we've taken. The N8 can edit video in the phone like it competing iPhone, allowing you to edit your videos before uploading them online. The media player also supports a wide range of video files including DivX, XviD, WMV and H.264.
You can personalise your phone by adding your own custom widgets. Not one but three live home screens - make one for work, use one for fun, and have one with your favourite picture as the wallpaper. Swipe between the home screens with an easy gesture. Download more widgets from Ovi Store. The N8 also has GPS capabilities, Voice-guided navigation wherever you are in the world. Absolutely free. Simply enter where you want to go and Ovi Maps with voice guidance will tell you how to get there, turn by turn. By car or on foot.
In Summary, Nokia has built a superb phone in the N8, with a high quality camera and excellent connectivity, and run through its Symbian^3 software which needs improving. This phone is only recommended to people looking for a basic phone experience matched with an outstanding camera. Anyone looking for a smartphone would be wise to avoid it.
