Episodes about vision quests are usually pretty hilarious; Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson have both attempted them with interesting results. Putting the phrases "Thad Castle" and "vision quest" in the same sentence, naturally, made me expect hilarity. Thad has a big decision in front of him: graduate or declare for the NFL Draft. One of his genius teammates suggests that he get high on drugs and attempt a vision quest for spiritual guidance, and because he's not very bright (not that anyone on this show is particularly smart), he thinks this is a perfect idea - after ingesting enough drugs to last a week.
Everyone has fun with the lack of constraints this episode, but it really belongs to Alan Ritchson, who has far too much fun effortlessly toggling between the present-day, absolutely bewildered Thad and a future, disgruntled and life-hating Thad. Whether he's screaming like a high school girl or complaining about his family, Ritchson doesn't miss a chance to convey high-energy, high-volume Thad completely out of his element. Any element.
Stopping the badger leads Thad to accidentally shoot BMS's own mascot and at least one of his innocent classmates, which just makes him cry. This is another example of "it seemed like a good idea at the time," which I believe to be the deadliest phrase in the English language. Chasing after a wild animal with a bunch of tranquilizer guns may seem like a good idea, but it's really not, especially when you have no aim whatsoever. It's no surprise that everyone but Alex quickly learns to get out of Thad's way. It's amazing how much of an episode can be carried by Alan Ritchson getting to go off the deep end and Darin Brooks having to reel him back in.
He is also heavily prone to engage in excessive homoerotic behavior, especially in the hazing rituals of freshman players. He also uses rabies to enhance his performance from time to time, as he stated in episode "Legend of the Golden Arm," when saying that "only idiots" use steroids because rabies is undetectable for current doping test methods. Thad's dedication to the team and willingness to sacrifice anything to ensure the team wins, prompted coach Marty Daniels to name him Captain at the beginning of his sophomore year. This is the only time Daniels ever named someone so young captain.
Unlike his teammates, Craig is rather straight-laced and committed to his ultra-manipulative girlfriend Denise, with whom he breaks up when he finds out she cheated on him with other men, including a man from her marketing class whom she tells Craig is an NFL scout. It is revealed in the Season 2 premiere that Shilo has transferred to Georgia Tech (his character being written out due to Jones' major drug-related arrest). Shilo is from Columbus, Ohio.
Meanwhile, Radon temporarily moves in with Coach Daniels, whom he gets high on Ecstacy, leading the coach to try out his pregame speech on scantily clad women and start rambling about how much he loves his job. It's an interesting subplot if only because Coach Daniels gets to tell Radon how he really feels. Radon, in turn, feels like he and the coach have some sort of understanding, which couldn't be further from the truth.
Page Kennedy, who stars on Spike TV's Blue Mountain State, is accused of harassing a woman via text message after she shot down his advances. Tiffany Muller was granted a temporary restraining order against Kennedy, who she says was a friend who wanted more, but "it didn't go there." Muller claims Kennedy, who she met in May, "tried to touch me and take my pants off and I would push his hands away and tell him to stop." Muller fought and screamed until Kennedy "got exhausted and stopped," according to reports, but his sexting harassment of her continues unabated.
