Beckett, an avid reader of Castle's books, initially disapproves of having Castle shadow her on her cases, but later warms up and recognizes Castle as an useful resource in solving crimes. Castle is a blend of drama, comedy, and romantic tension.
As part of their investigation, Castle & Beckett meet master magician Tobias Strange (guest star Gilles Marini, "Brothers & Sisters," "Dancing With the Stars"). Meanwhile, the magicians aren't the only ones keeping secrets, as a new romantic relationship is revealed for Esposito and Lanie, on "Castle," MONDAY, JANUARY 10 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET). Also in the episode, Carrie Genzel ("All My Children") guest stars as Naomi Dahl, a former model and wife to a savvy billionaire philanthropist.
"Castle" stars Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, Stana Katic as NYPD Detective Kate Beckett, Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers, Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle, Ruben Santiago-Hudson as NYPD Captain Roy Montgomery, Tamala Jones as Medical Examiner Lanie Parish, Jon Huertas as NYPD Detective Javier Esposito and Seamus Dever as NYPD Detective Kevin Ryan.
As a crime procedural, Castle is one of the least impressive shows out there, with bland, uninvolved crime solving each week. It's hard to ignore the major deficiencies: the crime solving, mentioned above, the secondary characters don't have much to do but carry out generic police operations, and the Alexis plots are the same each week-Castle worrying and Beckett chiming in to add more worry before everything turns out fine.
The auctioneer is revealed as the murderer, but the episode's main point is that Castle can run around an ancient labyrinth with aged bottles of alcohol. The fact is, crimes are structured around the theme of the episode instead of the other way around, leaving very little plot.
They are joined by a surprise guest Natalie Rhodes, the actress who plays Heat in the movie adaptation. She is doing a "character research" to help transform herself into the spitting image of Beckett. Laura Prepon ("October Road" "That '70s Show") is tapped to play Rhodes. The other additional cast are Thomas Calabro, Stephen Macht, Melody Thomas Scott, Randall Batinkoff. "Nikki Heat" will air on January 3, 2011.
Once that initial case was solved, Castle and Beckett continued to investigate strange homicides in New York, combining Castle's writer's intuition and Beckett's creative detective work. With Beckett as his muse, Castle used his newfound experience in the field as fodder for his latest novel and bestseller, Heat Wave. During this past season, Castle and Beckett's relationship has grown stronger as they've dodged bullets, captured killers, and solved countless murder cases in their unorthodox partnership. But by the Season Two finale, Beckett's new relationship with a robbery detective has pushed Castle away, forcing them both to confront their feelings for one another. When Castle leaves to finish writing his second Nikki Heat novel, Naked Heat, Beckett has to watch him walk away, unable to express her true feelings and unsure whether he will return to the precinct.
