Protect the football. Oklahoma is talented enough to score against this Huskies defense and has done a very fine job of protecting the football this season, but the Huskies have been ball hawks, picking off 19 passes this season. In their four losses this season, the Huskies have forced just one turnover (against Temple). In their eight wins, they have forced 28 turnovers (five turnovers once, four turnovers three times, three turnovers three times and two turnovers once). If Oklahoma avoids turning the ball over against the UConn defense, they shouldn't have a problem coming away with the win.
Make the defense respect the pass. Oklahoma ranks 13th in pass efficiency defense (51st in pass defense), but are 62nd in rushing defense, giving up 151.8 yards per game. Big East Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Todman has rushed for over 1,500 yards and has scored 14 touchdowns. He's the nation's fifth leading rusher and it's a good bet the Sooners will key in on the running game to force quarterback Zach Frazer to win the game with his arm. Frazer doesn't have to throw for 400 yards, but he has to make the Sooners defense respect his ability to hit short- and mid-range passes to move the ball and the chains. If he's able to do that, holes will open for Todman and the running game. Oklahoma. This game may be a little closer than a lot of people are expecting. Oklahoma has been here before and the experience is not an unfamiliar one for the Sooners. Connecticut, on the other hand, is venturing into unfamiliar territory and should be riding an emotional wave heading into the game.
This will be the Huskies' third consecutive year now with a bowl appearance. Last year was a 20-7 victory over South Carolina in the PapaJohns.com Bowl (let's order some pizza.dot com!). However, it should be noted (and it has been) that UConn is the only team playing in a BCS bowl that wasn't even in the final BCS rankings.
Well, certainly there is a huge task at hand for the Huskies, as they are facing a team that won a conference with five ranked teams, and are ranked #7 in the country, while they themselves are in a conference with one ranked team sitting at #22 and probably didn't even crack the top 30 in the BCS. Well, to all the nay-sayers out there, I tell you one thing. Suck it up. Yea, there are more deserving teams in the country, but the system is flawed, and there is nothing we can do about it right now. The way the talk is going, seems that the game has already been played, and UConn doesn't have a snowball's chance in the desert while a big, fat sweaty man scorches it with a magnifying glass of winning this game. Well, this is sports folks, and if there is one truth that I have learned in my limited number of years watching them, it's that any team can beat any other team on any given day. So, let's take a look at what the Huskies need to do in order to pull off the major upset on New Years Day.
Arizona State won the inaugural Fiesta Bowl back in 1971, as well as the games in 1972, 1973, and 1975. Ohio State appeared in its first Fiesta Bowl in 1980, a 31-19 loss to Penn State. The Buckeyes rebounded with a victory over Pittsburgh on January 2, 1984 (coincidentally, the day of my birth - how appropriate!). Ohio State would not visit Arizona for the game again until that fateful night in 2003 that resulted in a double-overtime victory over the Miami Hurricanes and our first national championship in over 30 years. Last year's contest pitted Boise State against TCU, and ended in a relatively low-scoring 17-10 win for the Broncos.
Reportedly the smell of roasting chips caused many mouths to water, and one freshman even suggested a run to the local store for some chips and salsa so that everyone could sit around snacking while they enjoyed the fire, but he was silenced by an upperclassman. Previous sponsors of the game include Sunkist and IBM, and clearly nothing says "fiesta" like Big Blue. Loosen that top button on your Oxford!
