Welcome to Friday nights, 'Fringe.' In an obvious nod to another science fiction show that notoriously struggled and was ultimately canceled, tonight's episode had 'Firefly in its title.
The episode was an hour-long exploration of a seemingly random chain of events orchestrated by the Observer to discover something about Walter.
It was convoluted and a little ridiculous, but as Walter said, he's not human. We can't expect him to think like us. It was a lot of fun watching all the disparate threads of the story come together by the end, highlighted by a few more direct moves by the Observer.
It was tragic to discover that it was the butterfly effect -- well, firefly in this case -- that led to Roscoe's son's death. A butterfly effect triggered by the Observer saving Walter and Peter from an icy death all those years ago.
It's a tremendous weight and a testament to his strength that he continues persevering and trying to find a way to save everyone. I suspect he won't be able to.
John Noble turned in another knock-out performance; particularly in those moments when he thought Peter was dead or dying. It remains one of television's most criminally under-appreciated acting jobs.
We know it was a test to see if Walter would make the decision that would endanger Peter's life if faced with it. He did. It could have been for both reasons, of course, or a whole new reason we can't even fathom yet.
But then there's a whole second universe that was impacted by Walter's fateful decision to save Peternate and bring him back to this world.
At this point, it's deliciously as complex as 'Lost,' and I can only hope that Fox sees the value of letting this story play out to its intended conclusion.
It's a shame it's on opposite 'Supernatural,' but at the same time, 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' are further proof that sci-fi and fantasy can still work on Fridays. Will there be any viewers left for 'Fringe'? Time will tell.
Fox should give the series an early renewal as a show of faith to the show as a potential Friday franchise. Even if it's only for 13 episodes at this point, it will encourage fans to not abandon the show.
