The writing is tighter, the cast is more confident in their characters, and the humor got a little racier. Now if only they'd get rid of, or at least turn down considerably, that annoying laugh track!
Ok, so the laugh track is part of the charm. But when Mary Tyler Moore took the stage in her much-hyped guest star turn at the onset of the episode, it was so loud that it was distracting! I get the audience's reaction; every MTM line was solid gold, especially the immortal "You've got spunk. I can't stand spunk.", which was just one of the references to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which Betty White also starred with her in.
Mary aside, the show also showed wisdom by bringing back neighbor Rick (Wayne Knight, Seinfeld). In this first episode, Rick proposes to Joy (Jane Leeves) so that she can get a green card and stay in the U.S. She blows him off, but after joining Elka (Betty White) in prison, sadly, after MTM is released, Joy gets a bit more desperate.
Rick kept talking about his balls. Elka and Rick admit to an affair, which provides several punchlines. Really, anytime Rick was around, lots and lots of sex talk. Not that I'm complaining.
Hot in Cleveland will continue its trend of acquiring great guest stars in its second season, adding a hefty roster of celebs to an honor roll that includes Carl Reiner, Tim Conway, Amy Yasbeck, Joe Jonas, Dave Foley, Huey Lewis and more.
The press release also stated that White will return along with her co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick although she previously expressed her willingness to stay for a season only. White was only intended to be a guest star at first, but due to her character's appeal, she was promoted to be a regular.
As you might remember, her character Elka was arrested and booked at the end of the season 1 finale for possessing a cellar full of stolen goods that her husband had acquired while working for the mob. Later, we witnessed Betty doing Betty very well, reminding Wendie Malick's pompous and out-of-touch soap actress character Victoria Chase, "I'm in freaking jail!" Indeed she was.
And what do you know? In the slammer, Betty ran into none other than her old Mary Tyler Moore castmate, star Mary Tyler Moore, who was playing a fellow cellmate in a hilarious nod to the pair's storied history together. While Betty's Elka was there for possession of stolen goods, Moore was there for "drunk and disorderly," she explained.
The best idea that they could come up with was a garage sale, which led Joy-who spent most of the episode trying to talk her out of marrying Rick (Wayne Knight) for a green card so she could stay in the country, but failing-to sell Victoria's "chill pills" to the mailman.
As you might have guessed, it all came together nicely in the end-with the cast gingerly sitting around their favorite booth in their favorite bar together. Awww, sweet. Life is fun in a sitcom. Are things ever not eventually happy in Cleveland? I seriously hope it's never otherwise. Of course, one of the best parts of Hot in Cleveland is the show's genius one-liners.
