On May 3, 2010 Undercovers was officially ordered to series by NBC for a fall premiere, Wednesdays at 8/7c. Undercovers premiered on Wednesday, September 22,[4] making it the second spy series produced by J. J. Abrams since Alias. J. J. Abrams directed the Undercovers pilot.[5] It was the first time he had directed a pilot since 2004's Lost premiere and the first episode of television he has directed since a 2007 episode of The Office. Abrams said of the show, "This show does have ongoing stories as well but they are much more personal based and character based.
They are aided by Leo Nash, a top agent who was once Samantha's boyfriend and geeky computer expert Bill Hoyt, who worships Steven. Lizzy is Samantha's sister, a recovering alcoholic who helps run the catering business and is unaware of what the Blooms are really up to. The Blooms are unaware that Shaw has a secret agenda for reactivating them.
When NBC announced Undercovers back in the spring, it had several things to recommend it -most notably, that the series was created and produced by J.J. Abrams, who has built up a lot of goodwill with projects such as Lost, Fringe and Star Trek. Abrams proved himself skilled in the spy genre with Alias in the early '00s, so a show about a retired spy couple pulled back into espionage seemed like a slam dunk for NBC.
Despite their lack of star power, Kodjoe and Mbatha-Raw shared an obvious chemistry. So why didn't audiences respond to Undercovers? Kodjoe's and Mbatha-Raw's low profile may have worked against them. Instead of making audiences curious, viewers may have simply changed the channel when they didn't recognize any of the actors. The Undercovers writers tried to shift after a few episodes had aired, but by then, ratings were in the toilet and NBC declined to order a full season.

The special 12th Annual A Home for the Holidays (3.9 million, 0.7) was down 36% compared to last year and The Defenders, which will be moving to Fridays next year for a brief period, was solid (5.6 million, 1.1).
The network beat out ABC's comedy block rehash: The Middle (6.1 million, 1.5), Better With You (5.1 million, 1.5) and Modern Family (6 million, 2.0), which was also the night's top-rated program of the night in the 18-49 demo. The network aired a 90-minute repeat of CMA Country Christmas (4.25 million, 1.1) at 9:30 p.m. Fox aired new episodes of Human Target (5.8 million, 1.4) and the Million Dollar Drop (4.8 million, 1.6) game show. The network won the night among adults 18-49. The CW aired back-to-back repeats of freshman series Hellcats (1.3 million, 0.6).
