Advantages And Drawbacks Of Using Morning After Pills

This case of unwanted pregnancy can become a great crisis for them. Emergency contraceptive pills are existing in market to avoid such situations. These are used in case of contraceptive failures or when the couple had intercourse in absence of any contraception or when intercourse is forced.

Morning After Pill is one such kind of emergency contraceptive pill. This has to be consumed within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Morning After Pill is considered as one of the safest means of evading unwanted pregnancy.

The constituents of Morning After Pills are same as that of OCP i.e. Oral Contraceptive Pills. The major composition of these are hormones like levonorgestrel or Progesterone or Estrogen. The purpose of each hormone present in the pills is different. Progesterone stops the sperms from reaching the eggs while estrogen helps by avoiding the ovaries from discharging eggs. Consequently, each of these functions, prevents the occurrence of pregnancy.

The method of action of morning after pills is divided into three steps. All this steps forms an vital part of its action. Firstly, the morning after pill prevents the ovulation i.e. prevents the production of eggs from ovaries which in turn prevents the fertilization process. Secondly, it also adjusts the regular menstrual cycle i.e. it interrupts ovulation and thus, pregnancy is not possible. Thirdly, it irritates the lining of the endometrium of uterus and makes it unfit for implantation of fertilized egg there. This also further prevents pregnancy.

There are certain advantages as well as disadvantages of using this. Given below is a list of them. The advantages of morning after pills are that it is on hand in the market and if you are more than 17 years of age, instruction of physician is also not required. It operates as a final way out to evade the unwanted and unplanned pregnancy. They do not cause any harm to the fetus even if the pills are not able to avoid the pregnancy. These don't have any effect on the fertility of the women. Their fertility remains the same as previously and returns to normal with the onset of next menstrual cycle. Also Morning after pills have lesser risk of endometrial and ovarian cancer.

There are also several disadvantages of using morning after pills. They can cause a few side effects like nausea, dizziness, vomiting, vertigo, diarrhea, irregular periods, abdominal pain etc. Little serious complications like hypertension, liver disorders, blood clots in lungs, intestine, heart etc. can also crop up. Ladies, who are more than 35 years of age and have syndromes like heart problems, liver diseases, cancer etc, are advised not to take this. Probabilities of having ectopic pregnancy i.e. deposition of fertilized egg in places other than uterus i.e. in fallopian tubes, are more in women who take Morning after pills. Skin rashes and breathing problems develop when women become allergen to this. Morning After Pills may cause somber problems in women who have diabetes, migraine or heart diseases.
