Mold Removal - Choose a Technique That Won't Kill You!
A house or building may appear to be clean, but what lurks beneath the walls and surfaces may be killing you.
Mold is considered as fungi with different species existing everywhere. These fungi cannot always be readily seen and sometimes can be found inside air conditioning vents or within the wall. They may even be hidden behind the paint of your home.
Mold can pose a significant health hazard, if left untreated. Particularly sensitive individuals who have touched mold or inhaled mold spores can generate an allergic reaction
Mold removal products can be categorized in four different ways:
1. Cleaners - This type of product will make the surface nice to look at, but do not actually kill the mold.
2. Biocides - Like chlorine bleach, they can kill bacteria, however, selectivity is involved. Different types of mold require different types of biocides. How do you know you have selected the right one for the mold you have?
3. Encapsulants - These are painted on the surface. The theory is that it will prevent the mold that is there from escaping to cause harm, but, like cleaners they do not kill the mold. And when the sealant begins to fail, you are in more trouble than before.
4. Sanitizers - Sanitizers, such as Calbrite can both kill and retard the growth of mold AND bacteria. What's more, when selecting a sanitizer like Calbrite, you can make sure that it is non-toxic, biodegradable, thus, safe to you and your environment.
Other mold removal techniques include media blasting, manual sanding and scraping, and mold remediation through heat process. Manual sanding or scraping is a slow and a labor intensive process without any assurance that molds can be totally removed. Media blasting is one the most accepted methods providing thorough cleaning with less labor. However, medium to be used must be considered to be effective and appropriate.
After choosing a safe and effective technique for mold removal, if not doing it yourself, is to choose a reputable company to do the job for you.
