Some Important Facts About Fibromyalgia

This is one of the most common disease which affects a large number of population. It has been seen that Fibromyalgia is more common in females as compared to males. The group of people who falls between 25-60 years are commonly affected. Now-a-days, large number of children are also affected by this as shown by a survey.

In fibromyalgia, pain is felt where muscles are attached to ligament, tendon or bone. Fibromyalgia is much alike arthritis. Like arthritis there is no bone deformity in fibromyalgia. In fibromyalgia, usually pain starts in neck or shoulders and gradually spreads to other parts. The intensity of pain varies depending on the weather change, time of day, stress, body activity etc.

There are different kinds of pain in this. It may be described as aching or stiff pain, or stabbing or burning sensation, or a sudden rise that have radiating nature. Some symptoms seen in fibromyalgia are sleep disturbances, fatigue, and migraine headaches. It may be due to lack of serotonin. Important symptoms of the fibromyalgia patients are accounted for diagnosis. Occasionally wrong diagnosis is made with the absence of symptoms to diagnose it as other disease.

Other rare symptoms includes, tingling, numbness in extremities, GIT symptoms like irritable bowel syndrome, bladder spasm etc. Painful menstruation is a main problem in females. Also the patient may suffer from constipation alternating with diarrhoea. Lowered concentration, depression and alteration of mood may also occur due to fibromyalgia.

There is no distinct reason for fibromyalgia. There are certain assumptions and hypothesis which are considered to cause this. Many facts are there which states some explanations relating the cause for this. One point of view is that reduction in blood flow in the muscle tissue and in the thalamus along with caudate nucleus is the reason for pain. While some other studies say that the decreased level of serotonin may be causative. In fibromyalgia, the defective functioning of pain processing pathways might also be the reason for pain.

Two types of fibromyalgia is present. These are Primary and Secondary. Primary fibromyalgia has no proper cause, hence it is called idiopathic. While Secondary is because of some cause. It may related to other diseases like Hepatitis C, Lyme disease, surgery, injures etc.

The main target of treatment to fibromyalgia is to get rid of the pain. Some medicines are recommended to minimize the muscle pain. Also anti-depressants are prescribed in some cases. Certainly Muscle relaxants like skelaxin etc can also help. Along with this, there should be change in lifestyle also. Exercises are essentially the best. Some exercises are swimming, cycling, aerobics, yoga etc. However, this all should be done under the expert guidance.
