What Is Staff Infection?

Staphylococcus, a group of bacteria which is responsible for causing many diseases and it lives in the body of human beings. Staphylococcus cannot be seen in naked eyes as they are very minute organisms. Under microscope, they look like bunch of grapes or round berries. These bacteria are gram positive with unencapsulated cocci. The most common disease causing bacteria is Staphylococcus Aureus amongst the 30 varieties of Staphylococcus. Nose, anus, genital region and mouth are the common places of their living. The bacteria moves towards the injured regions of the skin and causes infection. Staff Infection can occur in anyone and in any age group. But more commonly it occurs in certain group of people. These are newborns, people with chronic diseases like cancer, lung diseases, diabetes, women who breastfeed their young ones, those having skin injuries and those who have weak immune system.

Accurate diagnosis is possible with the help of certain signs and symptoms in Staff infection. When staff infection occurs in blood, it is known as bacteremia or sepsis. In this condition, patient suffers from high fever with chills and blood pressure goes down. Boil, furuncle or abscess is a collection of pus in a localized are due to infection in the skin. The affected area changes inot red, inflamed, swollen and painful.

Impetigo, cellulitis, mastitis in breastfeeding women, bacteremia, pneumonia, endocarditis leading to heart failure, osteomyelitis, Scalded skin syndrome are the most common diseases caused by Staphylococcus. It can even lead to food poisoning which causes nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. Toxic Shock Syndrome is caused by the toxins released by Staphylococcus.

Diagnosis of Staff infection is done through symptoms and signs. In complicated cases like pneumonia, lung diseases, bacteremia etc, culture of blood or infected fluid samples is performed. To find out which antibiotics should be given more tests are performed subsequently. The treatment of skin infection is usually done with the help of antibiotic ointment. Sometimes oral antibiotics are also given. Incision is performed to drain the abscess that is formed. In more serious cases, intravenous antibiotics is given.

This infection is infectious. The discharge in case of boil or abscess contains the staphylococcus and whoever comes in contact gets infected with this bacteria. It is important for the infected person to make use of healthy and hygiene methods. Sharing of personal towels, razors etc should be avoided. It is very important to follow this in case of facial staff infection.
