Author: lucilledabs

If you have kids, you can engage them to have a carpentry project by building a simple bird house feeder. Here, you can also have a fun bonding activity.

You will need cedar or plywood cut-outs for a project like this and do not forget your stick glue, nails, and screws as well. In this case, you need a couple of tools as well, you need a hammer, drill, and a saw. When it comes to this kind of project, you cannot be a hundred percent sure at first with regard to the bird species that will visit your bird feeders.

You can do a lot of things if you let your imagination run wild here. It may be either as simple as illustrated in Figure 1 or you can add up more fixtures such as bird baths, nest box and other decorations. Here is where you need to consider several factors if you want to build an effective bird feeder. First, try to use plywood that is about 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick. You want the plywood to be strong because if it is too thin, it will not hold up well against the elements. The design of the roof of the bird feeder should be in a slating position to allow the water to fall to the ground. In this case, drill several holes from the bottom so that the feeder will have drainage. You need to use galvanized screws or nails because these are stronger. Make use of the stick glues to hold joints and pieces together prior to hammering the nails and screws as this can significantly extend the life of your bird house feeder. If you wish, you can use some paint to decorate the bird feeders. You need light hue lead-free paints if you want the feeders to have some color. In this case, do use linseed oil to coat the bird feeders. This will prevent the wood from drying out. Only use the linseed oil if you will not coat the bird feeders with paint. Always take the necessary precautions if electrical equipment and sharp objects are to be used. In this case, do consider a discussion on the do's and don'ts for this kind of project. Bird feeders can be put up using three methods. It is also a good idea to make a bird feeder pole.

There are a number of benefits that can be attributed to bird feeder projects. Advise the kids not to prey on the feeding birds. You can have lots of fun watching the birds.
